Letter From Our President

It's a bright, sunny, cool October morning. The view from my office window now shows mostly bare branches with one or two poplars hanging on to their golden yellow leaves. Birds are visiting the bird feeders. The amazing thing is that there are still fresh bush beans and celery in the garden on October 24th.

On September 30th I traveled to Woodstock, NB with VE1PIN. We attended the IRG meeting. There was a lot of discussion about the need to increase the membership in IRG in order to have enough money for the repairs to the many repeaters in the IRG linked repeater system. There is a complicated arrangement with a government agency for the upkeep and repair of the repeaters. Due to new security considerations after 9-11, IRG members are not allowed access to the sites. Therefore IRG has to pay the government technicians for any repairs. Membership is $15.00 a year.

The SJVARA Harvest Get Together at Lakeview Restaurant on Sunday October 14th at 2 PM was a great success. There were 18 people enjoying the food and the socializing. We had a short meeting while waiting for the food orders. Three new members were voted on for membership. They are KB1PMS, KB1PMR, and KB1EBE. We welcomed them to our club.

N1EVO and KB1OWW tested out their recently made J-pole antenna on the porch near the back room where we were. Carl, with his hand held radio at 1/2 watt, reached the 146.640 repeater. We were all impressed with the performance of the antenna.

Odds and Ends

At our harvest get together, those present each got a ticket stub. A drawing was held for three door prizes. N1EVO was the first drawn. He got first choice of the three items, which were any ARRL publication, a Linksys Router, and a unique clock. N1EVO chose the publication and asked for Antenna Compendium 5. KB1FTK got second choice, and chose the Linksys router. W1TCP was third and got the clock.

On October 16th the Damp Rid in the repeater cabinet was renewed by N1FG,with the help of Ty, the cat. Ty has been going up the tower trail in the woods with me daily.

N1EVO and KB1OWW worked with the scouts during JOTA. The setup was at Pine Tree Lodge, because the scout camp (where N1EVO and N1FG were last year) was discovered to have an unsafe floor. They were able to make some contacts in Russia, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria.

During the net on October 23rd KB1OWW offered W1TCP a J-Pole antenna. W1TCP accepted the offer with thanks.

On October 25th N1EVO and KB1OWW checked the 146.640 repeater, hoping to find the cause of the volume drop. They found some corrosion and cleaned it off. They used a volt meter on various connections and got good readings. Thanks, guys.
