Letter From Our President

In the last newsletter, there were still beans growing in the garden. Now everything is buried with snow. We just had our third 6" snowstorm up here on the hill. The evergreen boughs are weighed down with snow. My ham contacts down under in New Zealand are sending me photos of their blooming spring. Since they do not get any snow where they live, they have a hard time imagining what we have here and what it entails workwise, i.e. shoveling, plowing, etc.

Here is an e-mail recently received from Bill Cobb about the repairs to the Rocky Mountain tower building.

"Checking in again on Rocky Mountain.

We had advertised in our newsletter and in lookout circles for some labor to assist with Rocky Mountain repairs. We didn't get much response due to the location. There is a member up your way that I discussed Rocky with recently and he said he may be able to tackle some of the repairs next Spring/Summer.

He and some other volunteers just finished some work on Allagash Mountain Tower. So I think we should touch base in the Spring to begin discussions on what we feel needs to be addressed first. I can assist with $$ for materials if the state can't provide anything.

Let me know how this sounds or if there are any other updates I should know about Rocky that would affect this potential plan.

Thanks
Bill Cobb
Maine Director
Forest Fire Lookout Association"

I have not replied yet. Anything I should add other than it sounds good?

Minutes of November 13th SJVARA Meeting

Start Time: 18:05
Members and guests present: N1FG, N1JHD, N1QMC, N1EVO, W1TCP, KB1OWW, Kevin Pelletier
Secretary’s Minutes: Motion made to accept the minutes of the October meeting by W1TCP, seconded by N1EVO. Passed.
Treasurer's Report:N1FRX: $2421.24 in account. Motion to accept treasurer's report made by W1TCP and seconded by N1EV0. Passed.
Old Business:
1. Rocky Mt.: Rocky Mountain repeater 14.10. Question was asked in regards to how high voltage should be. Will need to check on the Rocky Mountain repeater and bring water up for the batteries. N1JHD asked about spare fuses being kept at the repeater site. The fuses need to be checked. He is also purchasing extra fuses for both repeater sites and keeping the spare fuses on the repeater sites. The club will purchase the fuses. N1EVO has a diagram and will check it to make sure the correct fuses are purchased. N1FG will donate waterproof boxes for the fuses and N1EVO also has some containers for them. It was decided to bring along a battery cleaner for the Rocky Mountain repeater. N1EVO asked about checking the coaxial cable on Rocky Mountain. It was never replaced. N1JHD suggested a COAX sealer for both sites.
2. 146.640 Repeater: Battery reading for 146.64 repeater 13.36 The problem with the 64 repeater was taken care of on October 25th. It was checked for loose connections, the jumper cable connections were checked and corrected by N1EVO and KB1OWW. A cleaner was used to remove corrosion at several points. N1FG can attest to a well-done maintenance job.
3. Other: The third week in October, N1EVO and KB1OWW worked with the Scouts for JOTA at the Lonesome Pine Lodge. Had about 24 kids who attended and all enjoyed working the radios.
New Business:
1. Sky Warn Recognition Day: On December 1 and 2, Sky Warn Recognition Day will be held at the Caribou National Weather Station. Echolink will be used and amateur radio operators will set up several HF rigs. The goal is to contact other hams around the world and as many other Sky Warn stations as possible.
2.December Meeting:Those present decided on another potluck dinner at the Northern Door Inn with a gift exchange of a small gift ($5.00 maximum) on our regular meeting night, Tuesday, December 11th, at 6:00 PM. N1EVO asked N1FG to coordinate the dishes so we don't end up with all salads.
3. Other: None.
Program: At 6:40 there was a workshop on antennas given by N1EVO and KB1OWW. They tested a j-pole brought by N1FG. They found it was tuned for the Forestry frequency and not very good for 164.640 and 146.715. It was decided to leave it as is in case it is needed for the Forestry Frequency at the Allagash Checkpoint for the dog races again this year.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, December 11, Northern Door Inn 6:00 PM
Adjourned: 19:40

Sky Warn Recognition Day

"Sky Warn Recognition Day was started in 1999, by the ARRL and the NWS. It is the National Weather Service's way of saying "thank you" to Amateur Radio operators for their commitment to helping keep their communities safe. During the 24 hour special event, Amateur Radio operators will visit their local NWS office, set up Amateur Radio stations and work as a team to contact other hams across the world.

"Ham radio operators volunteering as storm spotters are an extremely valuable asset to National Weather Service operations, since they are cross-trained in both communications and severe storm recognition", says Scott Mentzer, N0QE, organizer of the event and Meteorologist-In-Charge at the NWS office in Goodland, Kansas."

****************************************

With all the snow we have had in the last three weeks, it looks like the Rocky Mountain repeater will not be visited til next season. We will just have to hope everything holds together for the winter and the Can-Am races.

KB1OWW was visting his son in Berwick during Thanksgiving. He made a visit to the Ham Radio Outlet in Salem, N.H. He said that if you go there you need to leave your wallet and credit card at home. His grandson reported that "Grandpa" spent a lot of money at the radio store.
