Letter From Our President

Dear Fellow Hams,

Happy Summer! The weather turned warm just in time to usher in summer on the calendar. The plants must be rejoicing after all the cold and wet days. Have heard several reports of rotted seeds and frosted plants. I held off on our garden. This spring was much like those of the 70's, 80's, and half the 90's, when we learned that holding off on planting brought quicker and better crops than planting too early.

The 146.640 repeater has been cured of its time-out problem. Many thanks to N1CHF, who made it possible for us to hold normal conversations once again.

A Fort Kent location has been chosen for the the 146.640 repeater. It means a lot of work has to be done. Some trees have to be cut and removed, and preparations for the base have to be made. Anybody willing to help with these preparations, please contact me.  We hope to get this work completed soon, so that the tower can be put in place this summer. 50' of Rohn Tower have been placed at the site.  We need about 50' more. Anybody want to help?

Miles, N8VJM, was married on June 8 in Tawain.

This afternoon, June 21st, 146.640, 146.715, and 147.33 are all giving back strong signals. 146.730 is still off the air. Scotty tells me new cavities have been ordered, a tower has been erected in a new place, and they hope to be on the air before the first of July.

We have had a few more check ins on the nets, but would like to have more of you take part. Now that the time-out problem has been eliminated it should be more interesting. Do we need to go to summer hours and have it later?  Your comments please about this.

Minutes of June 4 Meeting

Called to Order: 18:50
In Attendance:  N1FG,  N1JHD, N1QMC, N1CHF, N1CGV, KW1C

Secretary's Minutes: None
Treasurer's Report:  May Bal.: $358.65 + interest .33 + dues $12.00= June Bal.: $370.98. Since then $48.00 in dues have been deposited.

Have you paid your dues yet?   If not, please do.

Old Business:
Rocky Mountain: N1CHF reported: Duplexers done, radio done. Controller boards need software updating. Cables are needed to connect duplexers to radio. When N1CHF comes in July, he'll bring the radio and leave here for a month or so to make sure it is working okay before taking it up to Rocky Mt..
Any single tone to activate the repeater is still necessary, and every time after it ID's.

The 146.64 Repeater:  Steve will put in a new chip, that he hopes will solve the problem of inappropriate time-outs. (This has been done.)

Picnic:  Sunday, July 14, Cross Lake Picnic Area, 11:00 AM

Ham Sign: Fort Kent Chamber of Commerce would charge a one time fee of $750  to put (Ham 146.640) a sign up on their Fort Kent Signs.  Those present decided that was way too much, and since we are listed in the Repeater Directory, we don't really need a sign.

146.640 Call sign: KW1C will check with W1TCF about continuing to use his call sign.

New Business:
Arizona Hams: Don (WB0FXX) & Diane (KC7KND) Elrich sent questions to several of us about life in Fort Kent. They are considering moving to Fort Kent in a year or so.

Discussion of relocation needs for returning 146.64 to Fort Kent. See page 3  for this discussion.

Next meeting: Sunday, July 14, Cross Lake Picnic Area 11:00 AM
Adjourned:  20:40

In Case You Are Interested

The ARRL Out-going QSL Service had sent
out 1,016,100 QSL cards as of June 14th. This is 89,700 more
than at the same date last year. That's a lot of QSL cards.
Ham radio must be alive and well some where.

Happy Birthday To:

Relocating 146.640 to a Fort Kent Site

A site in Fort Kent on a 1380' hill with easy access has been chosen after inspection by KA1ZOE, N1CHF, N1FG, and N1JHD,  on June 6. On June 22, 50' of Rohn tower was delivered to the site, including one section with the base plate. We need to acquire more sections.
At the June 4th meeting we discussed exactly what would be involved for the relocation.
The tower needs to be set in cement, or if ledge is the base, which it may be, the ledge will have to be drilled to anchor the tower.
First, some trees will have to be cut and removed from the site.
Two 50 watt solar panels at about $660 for the two.
Solar Panel Mount, which can be made.
Housing for the repeater: Suggestions: Empty Oil tank, old chest type freezer. Eventually a small cement block building will be made.
Someone could make an insulated battery box. We will probably need new batteries, but may start with the ones already with .64. We will need coax to connect antenna to radio.

We hope many of you will be willing to help with this relocation. Both labor and some money is needed. Please let me know what you can do.

World Radiosport Team Championships

The "Olympics" of Amatuer Radio will be held this year July 13-14 in Finland. The competing teams will  be working within the IARU HF World Championship Contest, running  their own serious competition by using special OJ call signs."  Everyone is invited to take part in this event. The competitors need to make contacts from all over. Let us know if you have an exchange with one of the teams.
