Today (July 26th) it is much cooler! It is 65F at 14:00. When I reported the rainfall to the NWS yesterday, I was told it would be chilly. The next two days would be warmer, but the 29th and 30th would have the feel of September! All the plants, garden and wild, are ahead of schedule. Flowers that usually bloom through August are already setting seed.
| K1XI(Randy) and N1HBY (Gretchen) will be coming up on Friday, July 30, and going up to Rocky Mt. on Saturday, July 31. They will be replacing the solar panel and adding two batteries. They need help to get the items up the mountain. If you know of anyone who can help, have them contact me. Non hams will be paid. Old Business: 1. Rocky Mt.: Voltage 13.64 Volts at 09:40, July 13. The trip to Rocky Mt to replace the solar panel and add batteries was cancelled due to bad weather. K1XI (Randy), K1MJB (Marty Baker), and N1HBY (Gretchen) went up late in the day. Randy repositioned the antenna. 2. 146.640 Repeater: On July 9, a very hot day, K1XI and AA1XD headed up to the tower at 7:30 AM. Guy wires were tightened and grounded. Marty Baker (K1MJB) purchased and donated the clamps for grounding the guy wires. The hardline was reversed and two new connectors added to the ends. The tower was grounded all the way from the top to the bottom. On July 8 Randy and Gene put up an antenna on Lonesome Pine Lodge for the Forestry radio during Can-Am. They also checked my HF antenna and put out radials for it. |
3. Field Day Report: The few of us who were there had a good time, good food, and interesting antenna work. N1EVO made 97 CW contacts. KB1OOW, N1FG, N1QMC, and W1TCP made 40 voice contacts. We were off air from 21:00 til 09:30 due to interference from college lights. 4. Other: Thank you cards were signed for Gene and Randy. We greatly appreciate all the work they have done for us. There was an antenna discussion. N7GLR mentioned the Log Book of the World and EQSL. N7GLR has had 13,000 look ups. They call it a “field day”, but it is unlike any field day that most folks experience. Instead of footraces, jumping and leaping contests, or sack races, local members of the American Radio Relay League raced on Saturday and Sunday to see who can connect with the greatest number of ham radio operators across the North American Continent and the world. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, seven members of the St. John Valley Amateur Radio Association joined 35,000 other ham radio operators across the U.S. and Canada for a 24-hour exercise to contact as many ham radio stations as possible. According to the ARRL website, some members participate in the field day as a contest, but many operators use the event as a chance to hone their skills in preparing to respond in an emergency situation. They set up a large tent on Crocker Beach near the University of Maine at Fort Kent, ran antenna wires willy-nilly into the branches of nearby trees, and then started tapping out Morse code as rapidly as they could move the lever. |
According to Gale Flagg, call sign N1FG (Number One Flower Girl), the Fort Kent club contacted 137 different stations by 2 p.m. Sunday. Ninety-seven contacts were with Morse code, and 40 contacts were voice links. Charles Zafonte, call sign N1FRX, said, “When all other forms of communication are down, a person with a radio and a generator, or just a battery backpack, can get the word out in an emergency situation.” Peter Pelletier, call sign W1TCP, told a story on Saturday about how he used his radio to help a man who was having car trouble. Pelletier said, “For me, it’s the different aspects of people helping people.” Other club members who joined in the event include Carl Pelletier, call sign N1EVO; Gil Daigle, call sign N1JHD; Joseph Deprey, call sign KB1OWW; and Sandra Daigle, call sign N1QMC. Local ham operators help during parades and other civic events, during the CanAm races, and during emergencies. From Andrew Birden's story about our Field Day. I can e-mail the complete story to anyone who wants it. N1FG |
14-element two meter beam mounted on a 10' tower section with rotor. Best offer over $100.00 N1FG at 834-6670 | " The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: 'Take only ONE. God is watching.' Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'" |
