It is 13 below zero this morning as I write. The sun is shining on the expanse of white snow creating a sparkling landscape. The birds are in constant action at the bird feeder and the suet cake. The chickadees fly into the feeder, snatch a sunflower seed and take off. Another bird is ready to land and snatch. Sort of like touch and go airplane landings. While on the subject of birds, KA1HOP reported one morning that a Goshawk had killed a Blue Jay. Since then the use of the bird feeder has dropped way down. Today, January 22nd I noticed that at 09:23 the 146.715 had a voltage reading of 14.24 volts. That is on the high side for an early morning reading. As you may recall, the solar controller on that repeater does not function properly during very cold weather. We need to use the repeater to keep the batteries from overcharging. The White Doves Holiday Projects toy drive for hurricane-stricken childen in Florida was a huge success. The ARRL urged its members to contribute toys or money for this cause. The response from hams all over the country was overwhelming. I received a nice thank-you card from the White Dove Project. | This is my second attempt at writing Feed-Point in the new html format. We got positive feedback on the first one from three members, which we appreciated. It does seem easier this time. At the January meeting N7GLR and KA7VNR patiently taught N1PMS and N1FG to play POSH. There are rules for certain combinations when rolling 6 dice. A game is ten-thousand points. One of my Echolink contacts is interested in playing it with me on Echolink. He is making a fancy box to roll his dice into. Our teachers play the game on trips. It does not take up much room in a suitcase, or a pocket. Balance $1124.26 - $40.00 website set up +1.01 interest + $24.00 dues = Jan. Balance $1109.27 Old Business: 1. Rocky Mt.: 13.85 volts at 14.33 Hrs Jan. 11th.Higher than last month. Please use the Rocky Mountain Repeater in below freezing temperatures. This is so the batteries won't overcharge and get dried out. 2. 146.64 Report 13.57 volts at 14:33 Hrs Jan.11th. Dec. 29th N1FG was able to get thelock unfrozen and replace the Damp-Rid in the repeater cabinet. All looked fine up there. 3. Website Set Up Dec. 15th: www.sjvra.org Thanks to N7GLR for his continuing work on the site. There are some interesting links on the site. Explore them. 4. Other: N7GLR brought up the subject of club dues. He noted the difficulty of keeping track of membership for those out of sync with the original March 31 pay date. The problem concerns voting at meetings. The ARRL might check up on our votes and find non-members voting. We discussed how to get the dues paid before the annual meeting. After much discussion, a motion was made by N7GLR to ammend the By-Laws to change the date of the annual meeting to April. The dues will be due in March at the March meeting with a 30 day grace period from that date. Dues will be prorated for anyone joining at other times of the year. Seconded by N1PMS. Passed. |
New Business:
1. Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Races a. Race dates: March 5-8 b. List of Hams signed up was passed around. At this time KB1EBE and AA1XD are scheduled to be the fixed net controls. 25 hams are on the list at this time. c. N1FG read some e-mails from the hams coming from Augusta. They will have a lot of equipment available for our use. We were hoping to get some input from people as to where the equipment could be best used. N1FG will send exerpts of those e-mails to those who can help us decide. d. N1PMS was happy to hear we have a ham to accompany
him to the 30 mile Checkpoint. We hope it does not "evaporate" as last year's did!
2. New Members: WB1FTK and KA1SJV Don
and Diane Erlich recently moved to Saint Agatha.
They sent dues and information and hoped to be with us at the January meeting,
but did not make it. N7GLR made a motion to accept them as members. Ka7VNR seconded.
Passed. We welcome Don and Diane to the club and hope to meet them soon.
3. March Meeting Date: The Can Am Banquet is on March 8th, which would be
our usual meeting date. We would like to pick a date that KW1C can make.
He promised to present the program (his Florida Trip). Think about it and we will decide
at the February meeting.

| HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO:
| Did you know that Astronaut Neil Armstrong's bacpack
radio, which transmitted "That's one small step for man, one
giant leap for mankind", was a VHF radio using Amplitude Modulation
designed by a ham?
| Hope Steve and Don had Happy Birthdays.

My first contact with JA6NKA was during Skywarn. He told me to check on QRZ for his website to see him and his family in traditional dress and to find a link to his museum collection of Yaseu radios. Massy told me his daugther Kaho became JA6QGW in 2003 at age 5 years and 4 months. His son Kousuke became a ham at 7 years of age and is JA6OYG. His wife, Yoshie, is also a ham, JA6REP. An envelope arrived couple of weeks ago containing a QSL card, a beautiful origami bird Massy had made, and a page titled "Practcal Japanese for English Speaking Hams" by JA1FB. There are English phrases, then the equivalent Japanese words, and an English phonetic translation for pronouncing correctly. For example: "Good Day (for any Greeting} Konnichiwa Corn-each-war." I never thought I would know anything about the Japanese language. What a nice thing for Massy to send me.
| G0LDK and his lovely wife Edna have gained great publicity in the newspapers, magazines and on TV since their Oct. 23rd wedding in the UK. G0LDK was heard on the .64 repeater when I was having computer trouble, and subsequently made a nice donation to our club. About a month after the wedding a headline stated: INTERNET: SILVER SURFERS MARRY AFTER WHIRLWIND ROMANCE We just clicked! George and Edna's on-line love. "When silver surfers George and Edna logged onto the Internet they never dreamed they would find true love. However, four months down the road the couple have married and say they have never been happier." A magazine said:"Netting a good 'un. You're never too old for cyberspace." I still talk to George and Edna every day and they truly
are very happy. Remember, George is 82 and Edna is 81. I continue to learn British cutoms
and terms from them. A ham is a gamon, to them.
